Day 2 of ICTS-SSWP '26: Scientific Measurement and Uncertainty
Day 2 of the ICTS-SSWP 20261 began with our first academic session on Uncertainties. Prof. Shirish Pathare from HBCSE introduced us to the importance of measurement, error analysis, and uncertainty in scientific experiments. Rather than focusing only on theory, he encouraged us to think critically about how experiments are designed and how reliable measurements can be obtained using the resources available.
The professor encouraged us to design our own experimental approaches for determining various physical quantities. This challenged us to think creatively, evaluate different methods, and consider the limitations and uncertainties involved in each approach. The discussions were thought-provoking and interactive.
After lunch, we moved to the lab for a hands-on session where we constructed an OpenFlexure Microscope. We used 3D-printed components and worked in teams to assemble and fine-tune the microscope. The activity gave us experience in understanding the design and construction of a scientific instrument from the ground up.
Although the assembly process took longer than expected and many of us were unable to complete our microscopes that day, the session was an exciting introduction to the project. In the following days, we continued working on the microscopes and eventually used them to observe various samples, making the effort well worth it.
Overall, Day 2 combined scientific thinking with practical experimentation, giving us a deeper appreciation of both the theory and practice of doing science.
